Report: Newcastle push ahead with move for Spurs-linked defender

The Sun have revealed that Newcastle United have expressed an interest in signing Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham.

It was reported during the summer that Spurs were competing with West Ham United for Milenkovic, with Fabio Paratici alleged to be a big fan of the versatile defender, who can also play as a right-back.

However, the 24-year-old ended up staying at the Artemio Franchi Stadium and subsequently signed a short-term contract extension with the Viola.

Corriere di Puglia e Lucania reported last month that Spurs were ready to try again to sign the Serbian in January but that has not materialised so far.

The Sun have now revealed that Newcastle have stepped up their pursuit of Milkenovic after their approach for Sven Botman was knocked back by Lille.

The report explains that Magpies wish to sign two new central defenders before the end of the month, with Fiorentina man one of the options on their wishlist.

However, the Viola have allegedly asked Eddie Howe’s side to pay £37.5m for the former Partizan Belgrade defender.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not surprised that Spurs have not pushed ahead with a move for Milenkovic. In Sanchez, Romero and Tanganga (if he stays), Conte has enough options for a right-centre-back role. A left-centre-back is a much bigger priority, with Davies being the only natural option for the role.
