Report: Newcastle register interest in keeper linked with Spurs and Liverpool

According to a report by The Express, Newcastle United have become the latest Premier League side who are interested in signing Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, who has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs.

The Turkish international has been heavily linked with a move away from the Super Lig this summer with clubs around Europe said to be tracking his progress.

Spurs are said to have already seen an offer for the 24-year-old rejected by Trabzonspor (Karadeniz Gazete) but the North Londoners have been backed to return with another offer for Cakir, who is reportedly rated highly by Jose Mourinho (Fanatik via Sport Witness).

Liverpool are also reported to have launched a bid, according to Turkish journalist Serdar Ali Celikle.

“I’ve made some calls with my Trabzonspor sources. I can confirm that Liverpool have made a bid for Ugurcan Cakir, which is worth €25m (£22m),” Celikler said, initially on VOLE’s YouTube channel as quoted by The Express.

Leicester City and Sevilla are also said to be keen on signing the shot-stopper ahead of next season (Milliyet).

The Express claim that Newcastle are also interested in Cakir, and are now ready to challenge the three English clubs and Sevilla for his signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

I don’t believe we are likely to sign a potential first-choice goalkeeper this summer. However, if we are on the lookout for Lloris’ long-term successor, we can certainly do a lot worse than Cakir. The Turkish number one is bound to evolve into one of the best goalkeepers in the game in a few years if he isn’t already up there.
