Report: Newcastle United in talks with Tottenham for defender

Newcastle United are in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a deal for Cameron Carter-Vickers ahead of the transfer window closing this evening, according to 90min.

The Magpies were reported to have made an enquiry for the USA international last month after missing out on Kristoffer Ajer, who instead joined Celtic (90min).

Carter-Vickers appeared regularly during Tottenham’s pre-season campaign and was handed a start in the 1-0 defeat to Pacos de Ferreira in the Europa League which saw him suffer an ankle injury in the latter stages of the first leg in Portugal.

Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo revealed at the weekend that the centre half has returned to training outdoors after recovering from the problem (Alasdair Gold).

Football.London reported earlier today that Spurs are looking to find him a new club ahead of this evening’s deadline.

The 23-year-old is considerably down on the defensive pecking order in North London with the likes of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga ahead of him, while Ben Davies can also provide cover if required.

Carter-Vickers needs a permanent transfer to help kick-start his career after countless loans at Championship clubs.

A move to Newcastle would be a great step in competing for a regular first-team place compared to the impossible task he faces at Spurs.
