Report: Newcastle want another former Spurs boss if they can’t get Pochettino

Newcastle United have set their sights on former Tottenham boss, Andre Villas-Boas, if they cannot convince Mauricio Pochettino to be their next manager.

Newcastle United’s £300 million takeover by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund is expected to go through shortly and it has been reported that Pochettino is the prospective new owners’ first-choice to replace Steve Bruce at the helm (Sky Sports.).

Foot Mercato now claim that, in case the Magpies’ soon-to-be new owners cannot convince the Argentine to take the job, they want either Villas-Boas or Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre to join.

Since being sacked by Spurs in 2013, Villas-Boas has rebuilt his reputation at Zenit Saint Petersburg and Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG and is now excelling with Marseille in Ligue 1.

Foot Mercato claim that the Portuguese boss is viewed by the Magpies prospective new owners as their plan B and it is suggested that he will be handed a substantial transfer kitty this summer if he agrees to take over.

However, the 42-year-old did reveal in a recent interview to Radio Renascenca (as relayed by the Daily Mail) that he has no intention of returning to the Premier League.

Given how well Villas-Boas has is doing at Marseille, I don’t expect him to leave after just a year in charge. After his experiences at Spurs and Chelsea, the last thing he needs is to come into a job like Newcastle where there will be a lot of pressure on him to deliver and risk failing again in the Premier League.
