Report: Newcastle’s move for rumoured Spurs target on verge of collapsing

Newcastle United’s move for rumoured Tottenham target Jesse Lingard is on the verge of falling through, The Athletic have revealed.

Lingard, who has struggled for game time under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick at Man Utd this season, is now into the final six months of his contract at Old Trafford (Transfermarkt).

Sky Sports reported earlier this month that Spurs had made contact with the Manchester United midfielder’s representatives over a free transfer in the summer.

However, The Daily Star revealed last week that Newcastle were leading the race for the England international this month.

The Athletic have now backed up that claim, stating that Magpies were the front-runners to snap up Lingard after United rejected Spurs’ approach for the 29-year-old.

However, they reveal that Eddie Howe’s side are now on the verge of walking away from the deal after the Red Devils asked for a sizable loan fee for the attacking midfielder.

The report claims that Newcastle could now reluctantly switch their attention to alternative targets before the transfer window closes.

This development could potentially impact Tottenham’s attempts to get Dele Alli out of the door after The Chronicle reported earlier this week that Newcastle were interested in snapping up the Tottenham man.

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe Lingard would be an excellent fit for Conte’s set-up and would be a considerable upgrade on Dele Alli. However, I do not see why Man Utd would want to strengthen their direct rivals for fourth place. So, Spurs are unlikely to stand a chance of signing the 29-year-old.
