Report: Nottingham Forest eye up Spence replacement as Spurs continue to lead race

Tottenham are continuing to lead the race to sign Djed Spence after engaging in more talks with Middlesbrough, while Nottingham Forest are eyeing a replacement, according to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas.

Spurs are thought to be headlining a list of sides interested in the 21-year-old, who enjoyed a positive spell on loan at newly-promoted club Nottingham Forest.

Antonio Conte’s side are at the head of the queue in front of the likes of Forest, Newcastle and Brentford, while interest extends abroad to Borussia Dortmund and Roma (Football.London).

Although reports suggested Spurs had agreed a deal worth £20 million to sign Spence (The Guardian), sources have since dismissed those claims by insisting no advanced talks have been held as of yet (Teeside Live).

But discussions appear to be progressing, according to Thomas, who states Spurs are leading the pursuit of the England U21 international having continued their conversation with Boro.

The journalist adds that Forest are already seeking out candidates to replace Spence, with Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles currently in the frame after returning from his loan spell with Roma.

Spence made 50 appearances in all competitions last term and is contracted with Middlesbrough until the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt).

It is only a matter of time until Tottenham complete a deal for Spence and things should soon ramp up when the players start to return for pre-season training.

Everything seems to be close to completion which is positive news and continues the club’s summer trend of getting deals done early.
