Report: Nuno gives his backing for Spurs to move for Portuguese international

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has given his backing for the club to look to proceed with a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Football Insider claim that a Spurs source has revealed that Nuno is an admirer of the Portuguese international and contact has been made between the two clubs.

Portuguese news outlet Record revealed Tottenham’s interest in June, and later followed up the report by suggesting that Sporting had no intention of letting the defensive midfielder, who has a €60m (£51.3m) transfer release clause leave.

Football Insider have stated that Sporting could now be prepared to sell Palhinha for a significantly lower fee of £14m.

After impressing during his two-season loan at Braga from 2018 to 2020, the 26-year-old was one of Sporting’s most consistent performers last season on his return to Lisbon and was rewarded with a place in the Portugal squad for Euro 2020.
