Report: Nuno would sanction sale of Doherty again if right offer arrived

The Athletic have reported there is an expectation that Nuno Espirito Santo would sanction the sale of Matt Doherty if the right offer came in this summer.

This would be the second time in as many seasons that Nuno would have sold the right-back, with Spurs having signed him from Wolves last summer.

In his final season with Nuno at Wolves, Doherty managed an impressive seven goals and six assists from 50 games across all competitions (TransferMarkt). He followed this up with six assists and no goals from 29 games for Spurs last time out.

The Athletic report that Nuno allowed the sale of Doherty last summer because he wanted a ‘more comfortable and progressive option on the ball’. Therefore, if the right offer came in, it is expected that Nuno would give the thumbs up to another sale.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Doherty just doesn’t look comfortable enough in a back four to be Tottenham’s first-choice right-back. However, I would expect the club to sell Serge Aurier this summer and sign a new player, having Doherty as the back-up in that position.
