Report: On-loan Spurs player could have chance at shock World Cup call-up

Tottenham Hotspur’s Tanguy Ndombele, currently on loan at Serie A side Napoli, could be set for a shock call-up to the France World Cup squad after injuries to key players.

Ndombele, who joined Spurs in 2019 as a club record signing for a reported fee of around £55 million (The Guardian), is currently finding his feet in Italy with high-flying Napoli. He has just one goal this season (Transfermarkt), coming in the Champions League.

The 25-year-old had struggled to settle in North London, only ever showing rare glimpses of his quality across the 91 appearances he has made for Spurs. He has scored ten goals and provided nine assists during that time (Transfermarkt).

Despite looking like he would be an outcast at both Spurs and with the French national squad, it appears there may be a chance for Ndombele to find his way back into the international set-up just in time for the impending World Cup in Qatar later this month.

With both Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante currently injured, France coach Didier Deschamps is running out of options in his midfield. According to L’Equipe, this puts Ndombele in contention for a recall to the squad for the big tournament.

Ndombele has just seven caps for the national side (Transfermarkt), but is now being touted as someone who could step in to the midfield, an area where “the most questions are being asked.”

The report from France suggests Ndombele has “come back nicely over the past few weeks with Napoli and is part of the candidates” for the 26-man squad.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tanguy Ndombele is clearly adjusting to life in Italy better than he did here in the Premier League, and is slowly but surely starting to show what he can do. There’s every chance he could make the World Cup squad, and who knows, maybe there’s still a chance for him to succeed at Spurs in the future. How many chances can a player get though, that is the question…
