Report: One factor may scupper Spurs’ chances of signing Girona star Viktor Tsygankov

AS have reported that Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Girona star Viktor Tsygankov but the North London club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League might scupper their hopes of signing the winger.

Tsygankov’s impressive showing in La Liga in the 2023-24 season is thought to have been noted by several clubs across the continent.

The winger, who scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 30 league matches, is now being backed to swap Girona for a bigger club this summer.

According to AS, Tottenham are one of the sides watching the Ukranian, with the attacker said to be on the North London club’s transfer ‘agenda’.

In addition, Arsenal and AC Milan are also credited with an interest in Tsygankov, with both clubs thought to have already made enquiries about his availability.

Tsygankov may choose Champions League over Tottenham

The report says that the winger might hesitate to move to Spurs since they cannot offer him Champions League football, particularly since Girona have qualified for Europe’s premier club competition.

Finally, the publication explains that the La Liga side are keen to keep hold of the 26-year-old but so far, they have failed in their efforts to agree on a new deal with the player and remove the €30m (£25.5m) release clause in his current deal.

Tottenham’s fifth placed finish in the Premier league last season meant that they will play Europa League football next season.

Even though Spurs cannot offer Champions League football to Tsygankov, a move from Girona to Tottenham is still a step up and would be tempting for the winger.

However, Postecoglou’s men may struggle to land the 26-year-old if other CL clubs like Arsenal also enter the race.

Postecoglou wants players who are dedicated to the Spurs cause rather than those who want to play in particular competitions, so maybe he simply is not the right fit of character that the Australian wants within his dressing room.
