Report: One Tottenham player is named in August’s best eleven across Europe

Whoscored have compiled August’s best eleven from the top five leagues in Europe, with Cristian Romero being the only Tottenham player to make the cut.

Romero’s performances for much of last season, particularly in the second part of the campaign after the World Cup, left a lot to be desired, with the Argentine coming under plenty of criticism from the Spurs fan base.

The 25-year-old admitted in an interview with The Athletic during the summer that his displays last season fell short of the standards he sets for himself, and vowed to put that behind him and concentrate on showcasing the best of himself this season, which he has done so far.

Romero is now part of Ange Postecoglou’s new leadership group at Spurs, having been handed the vice-captaincy, and the centre-back appears to have grown with the additional responsibility.

Not only has he been solid and vocal at the back but he has also stepped up with two important goals, including a thunderous strike into the top corner in Tottenham’s win over Burnley last Saturday.

Romero is among the best defenders in Europe

Whoscored have given the Spurs defender an average rating of 7.47 out of 10, which is enough to see him take his place in August’s best eleven.

The outlet wrote about Romero: “Ange Postecoglu has started his rein at Tottenham positively, and it all started when Romero scored the first league goal of Spurs’ Premier League campaign.

“The 25-year-old was solid at the back throughout the month having made 10 tackles and interceptions combined, and 10 clearances, all contributing to a WhoScored rating of 7.47.”

Romero has undoubtedly been back to his best so far this season and Micky Van de Ven appears to be the perfect foil for the Argentine, given the Dutchman’s calmness at the back.
