Report: Out-of-favour Spurs star to be given extended run in the side by Mourinho

According to Football Insider, Jose Mourinho will hand Matt Doherty an extended run in the side through Tottenham’s congested fixture schedule over the next few weeks, after Serge Aurier made a defensive error in the 2-0 loss to Leicester City on Sunday.

Aurier has been in brilliant form for the last two months and has kept Doherty out of the side with his near-flawless displays.

There were even suggestions that Tottenham are ready to hand the Ivorian a new contract on the back of his impressive run of form.

However, the 27-year-old made a foolish foul right on the stroke of half time to gift the away side a penalty, which Jamie Vardy converted to put the Foxes 1-0 up.

Football Insider report that Mourinho has seen enough and will now give Doherty an extended run in the team, with the former Wolves man not having featured in the Premier League since the 1-0 win over West Brom at the start of November.

The report claims that the Spurs boss always planned to rotate to his full-backs and has now informed the Republic of Ireland international to be ready to play several matches in succession.

Spurs Web Opinion

Doherty has come in for some unfair criticism since arriving at Spurs. Although his performances have been a little below par, he has not had a consistent run in the side to build some momentum and stake his claim for a starting birth. The 28-year-old now deserves his opportunities but he will know that he needs to play well to keep his place in the side as Aurier is breathing down his neck.
