Report: PL club believe they are being used by Madrid to ‘to draw a bid from Tottenham’

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that his sources at Manchester United claim that people within the club believe Real Madrid are using them in order to draw a bid from Tottenham for Sergio Reguilon.

On the back of his impressive season on loan at Sevilla, Reguilon is rumoured to be on Spurs’ radar (ESPN), although Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that signing a left-back was not a priority for Jose Mourinho.

However, reports from Spain indicate that the Spurs boss is a fan of the Real Madrid defender and has already spoken to him about a possible move to North London (Ok Diario).

The Lilywhites’ hopes of landing the left-back seemed to have received a blow when AS claimed earlier this week that the Red Devils had made an offer for the 23-year-old, who was tempted by the prospect of a move to Old Trafford.

However, Ornstein’s latest update has added another twist to the saga as the journalist indicated that reports of Man United’s bid might be a smokescreen to get Tottenham to make an offer.

Speaking about United’s rumoured interest in the Spain international, the journalist said in his Ask Ornstein Podcast (as relayed by The Express): “We’ve seen all the reports, I’ve been told by some contacts there is an offer. But Old Trafford sources deny this and think they’re being used to draw a bid from Tottenham.

“This is a situation that seems to be changing by the day and I’m informed a final decision will be made in the coming days. We’ve seen in football so many times that nothing is guaranteed and things can change.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that Ben Davies is going to be our starting left-back due to his ability to tuck in and play centrally when we have possession. Jose might also want to have a more attacking left-back option in the squad to give him more options. However, if we were to sign Reguilon, that would be a clear sign that Jose does not think Ryan Sessegnon is ready. I would like to see the former Fulham man loaned out if we are to bring another left-back in.
