Report: PL club enter race to sign Spurs defender before transfer deadline

PA News Agency journalist Simon Peach has revealed that Southampton have also entered the race for Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga.

Tanganga has been extremely unlucky to have picked up a series of injuries over the last few months.

As a result, the Tottenham academy graduate has not been able to build on the promise he showed after breaking into the side last season.

The versatile 21-year-old, who is comfortable across the backline, has not managed a single Premier League appearance so far this campaign.

The Express & Star reported yesterday that West Bromwich were looking to snap up the Tottenham defender on loan until the end of the season.

Peach has now claimed that Southampton have also turned their attentions to Tanganga after pulling out of a deal for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

With just hours left until the transfer window closes, it remains to be seen if the young defender will complete a loan move away from Tottenham.

A loan move away from Tottenham would be beneficial for Tanganga as he needs regular game time if he is going to continue his development. Despite the fact that we are still involved in all four competitions, the 21-year-old does not look likely to get much game time at Spurs as there are multiple players ahead of him in the pecking order at centre-back as well as in either full-back positions.
