The Times have revealed that Premier League clubs have proposed some key changes to the FA Cup and League Cup format in the coming seasons.
The proposals have been put forward in an effort to reduce the number of fixtures that clubs will play domestically in future seasons.
One of the suggestions is that replays be scrapped for the third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup, with ties being decided through a penalty shootout in case of a draw in the first leg.
This was implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic but the FA Cup has returned to its usual format this season, with clubs having to replay the fixture if the first leg ends in a draw.
The Times reveal that clubs also made a drastic suggestion to change the format of the Carabao Cup.
It was allegedly proposed that teams who are involved in one of the three European competitions (Champions League, Europa League or Europe Conference League), could field an Under-21 side for the League Cup or even completely withdraw from the competition altogether.

I am fully on board with scrapping replays for the third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup. The only issue in that would be lower league sides potentially missing out on the additional revenue that they could earn in the event of a replay.
However, I am not sure about the idea of not including the clubs that have qualified for Europe, in the Carabao Cup. That would only undermine the competition’s value.
