Report: Match officials confirmed for upcoming Chelsea v Spurs Premier League fixture

Ahead of Spurs preparing to take on London rivals Chelsea this Sunday, the match officials have now been confirmed.

Both clubs started their respective campaigns with a win last weekend, with Chelsea taking home the three points after a tightly-contested 1-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park courtesy of a Jorginho penalty.

Tottenham Hotspur meanwhile got off to a blistering start, trouncing Southampton 4-1. Goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, Dejan Kulusevski, and a Mohammed Salisu own goal secured Spurs the win after James Ward-Prowse had opened the scoring for the Saints.

The two sides finished in the top four last season and are hotly tipped to battle it out at the top again this year. Spurs will be hoping their impressive summer signings can help them leapfrog the Blues into third place this campaign.

With this in mind, it should be a fascinating contest on Sunday, as Spurs travel to Stamford Bridge for an early season six-pointer. The match will also see Antonio Conte go up against his former side.

Last season, Spurs lost 3-0 at home to Chelsea under Nuno Espirito Santo’s regime in September 2021. Tottenham also lost the reverse fixture 2-0 in January of this year, and fell to defeat against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final (WhoScored).

The Premier League has now confirmed who will be refereeing the game on Sunday, with Anthony Taylor set to officiate the fixture. He will be joined by Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn as his assistants.

Peter Bankes will be the fourth official for the game, tasked with keeping the dugouts in order. Recently-retired referee Mike Dean meanwhile will be at Stockley Park on VAR duties, along with his assistant Mark Scholes.

Spurs Web Opinion

This fixture is always a big deal, but perhaps even more so this year as both clubs have their sights set on disrupting the league’s top two. A win on Sunday for either side would be a real signal of intent and a confidence boost for the months ahead, but it’s just as important to ensure you don’t lose a game like this.

Playing Chelsea so soon might be a blessing for Spurs. While Tottenham got the majority of their new faces settled in early doors this summer, Chelsea are still working on their squad and find themselves in an adjustment period which could play in Spurs’ favour this weekend.
