Report: PL star Spurs allegedly wanted in January could sign new contract – Bissouma mentioned

The Telegraph have claimed that Douglas Luiz, who was previously rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar, is in talks with Aston Villa over a new contract.

Luiz was linked with a move to Tottenham in January, with The Daily Mail backing the North London club to make an offer for the Brazilian in the final few days of the transfer window.

However, the midfielder ended up staying put at Villa Park, with Spurs snapping up Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus on transfer deadline day instead.

Spurs have not reignited their interest in the Brazilian this summer as they swooped for Yves Bissouma early in the transfer window.

The former Brighton star will compete with Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp for a place in Antonio Conte’s two-man midfield during the upcoming season.

The Telegraph have now revealed that Villa are keen to tie down Luiz, whose current deal at Villa Park runs out in 12 months, to a new contract.

The report explains that this is because some of the options Steven Gerrard was eyeing as the 24-year-old’s replacement, including Bissouma, are no longer on the market.

Spurs Web Opinion

I doubt if Luiz was ever really at the top of Conte’s or Paratici’s wishlist. I suspect Spurs only looked at the Brazilian as a potential option since there were a limited pool of midfielders available during the January transfer window.
