Report: Player expected to leave club just months after Tottenham exit

Marca have claimed that Matt Doherty will leave Atletico Madrid when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Tottenham’s decision to terminate Doherty’s contract on transfer deadline day in January caught most people off guard, with the right-back signing a short-term contract with Atletico.

Speaking to The Independent last month, the Republic of Ireland international explained that the idea was for him to initially join the La Liga side on loan but the plan changed once Spurs realised they were at the limit of the number of players they could loan out in a single season.

Things have not gone according to plan for the 31-year-old since his move to the Spanish capital, with the right-back having made just one substitute appearance for the club so far (Transfermarkt).

Mundo Deportivo reported a couple of weeks ago that Diego Simeone did not ask for Doherty but the Atletico hierarchy saw his availability as a market opportunity to solve a perceived weakness in the squad.

If Marca’s latest update is to be believed, the former Tottenham man is expected to be on the lookout for a new club again.

The report adds that Atletico have ‘completely ruled out’ the option of either Doherty or Sergio Reguilon being at the club next season, which is why they are expected to reinforce in both full-back areas in the summer.

This is not surprising, given Simeone’s reluctance to give Doherty any game time at all.

I have no doubt that several Premier League clubs would show interest in the 31-year-old in the summer, particularly since he would be available on a free transfer.
