Report: Player Spurs allegedly tried to sign in 2021 said ‘yes’ to Arsenal this year

Todo Fichajes reveal that Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres, who rejected Tottenham’s advances in the summer of 2021, has said ‘yes’ to joining Arsenal.

Tottenham reportedly tabled an offer worth £55m for Torres in 2021 but the defender decided to stay put at Villarreal (Marca).

The 25-year-old was one of several left-sided centre-backs who was said to be on Spurs’ radar earlier this summer (Football.London) but Antonio Conte’s men ended up snapping up Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona instead.

TodoFichajes now claim that Torres was the subject of interest from the Premier League during the summer transfer window and that those clubs could reignite their interest in the player in January.

The report states that Aston Villa made a ‘timid’ attempt to sign the centre-back while Arsenal were ‘close’ to completing a deal for the defender in the final weeks of the transfer window.

It is asserted that Torres said ‘yes’ to a switch to the Emirates Stadium after having talks with Mikel Arteta in August.

Todo Fichajes explain that the Gunners could close the deal for the Spain international in January, with Villarreal thought to be hopeful of getting €40m (£35.9) for the player.

Spurs Web Opinion

We did show interest in Torres when Nuno was the manager but I doubt if Conte is keen on signing the Villarreal star.

If the Italian did want him, we would have likely made a move for him this summer, particularly given that Unai Emery’s side were desperate to sign Lo Celso.

However, the fact that we opted to move for Lenglet instead suggests that Conte was not convinced that the Spaniard would be the right fit.
