Report: Player Spurs tried to sign in January could still be sold this summer

According to Marca, rumoured Tottenham target Marco Asensio could be sold this summer if he does not sign a new contract with Real Madrid.

It was reported ahead of the January window that Ascensio was a target for Tottenham, with Madrid allegedly valuing him at around £43m (Daily Express).

The winger ended up staying put at the Santiago Bernabeu but there continues to be uncertainty over his long-term future, with his current contract at Madrid running only until 2023 (Transfermarkt).

Marca now reveal that Spurs and AC Milan both made moves for the winger in January and the 26-year-old will have no shortage of offers in the summer.

The report claims that Asensio’s entourage have agreed to sit down with the Real Madrid hierarchy for negotiations over a new deal.

However, it is explained that a date has not been set for talks and it is unclear whether an agreement will be reached by the two parties.

While Asensio’s priority is thought to be to extend his stay at the Spanish capital, it is said that Los Blancos cannot afford to offer the player a big salary, given their economic situation and their plans for a summer spending spree.

Spurs Web Opinion

Asensio would be a solid squad player for Spurs if we are to lose Steven Bergwijn in the summer. However, I do not see him getting too many starts for us unless Conte potentially throws a curveball and decides to convert the Spaniard into a wing-back, which is not out of the question.
