Report: Player took salary cut to seal loan move away from Tottenham

According to L’Equipe, Tanguy Ndombele took a salary cut in order to seal a loan move to Lyon until the end of the season.

Ndombele was one of four first-team players to leave Spurs on transfer deadline day, with the midfielder sealing a return to Lyon on loan until the end of the season.

The French club confirmed they would be paying a loan fee of €1.4m (£1.1m) to Spurs for the midfielder and have the option to make the transfer a permanent one in the summer.

Ndombele will be hoping to get his career back on track at his former stomping ground after struggling to make much of an impact at Spurs this season.

L’Equipe have now revealed the French international was so keen to return to the Groupama Stadium that he decided to take a cut in the £200,000 per week salary he earns at Tottenham (Sportac).

The report reveals that Lyon could not afford to match what the midfielder earned at Spurs and so he thus decided to take a pay cut during his spell in France.

Lyon director Vincent Ponsot told L’Equipe about Ndombele’s guesture: “It is a loan with loan indemnity, which is based on the partial support of the immobilization part of the transfer. But, above all, on the part of Tanguy, there were not only words.

“He was decisive and it is very rare in this field. He is one of the players who are not economically accessible, but he has done everything to be so.

“Often, we have words without the facts on the contracts. We did our part, we needed a supplement and it was he who provided it.”

Ndombele was not going to be able to complete a loan move away from Spurs unless the North London club subsidised a huge portion of his salary or the midfielder decided to take a pay cut.

The fact that the latter seems to have happened suggests that the 25-year-old is keen to get consistent game time under his belt and get his career back on track.
