Report: Player who departed Spurs in January in ‘advanced talks’ over PL return

The Athletic have revealed that former Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty is in ‘advanced talks’ over sealing a return to former club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Doherty made over 300 appearances for Wolves in his ten seasons at the club before making the switch to Spurs in a £14.7m deal back in 2020 when he became the one of the first arrivals of the Jose Mourinho era.

The 31-year-old struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting eleven during his two-a-half years in North London before signing for Atletico Madrid in January after his contract at Spurs was terminated by mutual consent on deadline day.

Matt Doherty could return to Wolves

The move to the Spanish capital did not go to plan for the right-back, who has made just two appearances for Diego Simeone’s men in his five-month spell at the club.

According to The Athletic’s latest update, Doherty, who is now a free agent, looks set for a return to the Molineux ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The report states that the Republic of Ireland international is in ‘advanced talks’ with Julen Lopetegui’s men and appears bound for the Black Country club after ‘positive discussions’ between the parties.

Spurs Web Opinion

I felt that Doherty was treated quite disgracefully by Conte as he had proven himself to be a very capable right wing-back when he had a run of starts under his belt. I am not surprised that the 31-year-old looks set for a swift return to the Premier League.
