Report: Fiorentina set to sign player who only left Tottenham in June

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini is set to join Fiorentina ahead of the upcoming campaign, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Italian international spent last season on loan in North London having become one of Fabio Paratici’s first signings since taking over the role as managing director of football.

The 27-year-old was said to have been brought into the Tottenham squad to challenge Hugo Lloris for the number one jersey (Football.London), however, he failed to displace the World Cup winner and did not make a single Premier League appearance with all ten of his games coming in either domestic or European cup competitions (transfermarkt).

Gollini admitted in May that he would stay in North London permanently if the club gave him the chance, despite having hoped for more regular game time (DAZN Talks podcast).

Instead, the club decided to send him back to Atalanta when his loan ended in June and have since brought in former Southampton stopper Fraser Forster as Lloris’ understudy.

Di Marzio has reported that Gollini will now return to Fiorentina, where he previously played as a youth player between 2010 and 2012.

With Hugo Lloris looking set to hang up his gloves at Spurs when his contract expires in the summer of 2024, it was clear that Gollini did not look capable of filling the void which the Frenchman will leave.

Instead, the club have done the sensible thing to buy more time to look for his successor by bringing in Forster to cover until a suitable option arises to become number one in a couple of years’ time.
