Report: Player who wanted to leave Spurs has motivational one-on-one meeting with Mourinho

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho has told Serge Aurier that he can be among the best right-back in world football, according to a report by Foot Mercato.

Aurier has failed to get a consistent run in the Tottenham side since moving from PSG back in the summer of 2017 and revealed in October that he wanted to leave the Champions League finalists before the current campaign started due to his lack of playing time (Daily Mail).

The 26-year-old full-back came close to leaving the club last summer but a move failed to materialise (Bal des Productions as relayed by Goal).

Many of the Ivorian’s performances this season have been far from convincing but his fortunes have changed completely since Mourinho’s arrival last month.

The full back has started every Premier League game under the new Spurs boss and if the report in Foot Mercato is to be believed, then Mourinho has paid special attention to Aurier since joining Spurs.

The report claims that the former Manchester United and Chelsea manager had a ten-minute conversation with Aurier in French in which he told the former PSG man in no uncertain terms that he had the ability to become one of the best right-backs in the world if he focused on and off the field.

It certainly seems like Mourinho rates the players in the squad very highly and his man-management style seems to be getting the best out of the likes of Aurier and Dele Alli for now. However, Aurier will have to maintain the same level of performance for a sustained period of time if he is to change the minds of some Spurs fans.
