Report: Pochettino in surprise talks to take over at Champions League club

According to a report by Championat (as translated by 90 min), Mauricio Pochettino is in talks to become the next manager of Zenit St Petersburg.

The Argentine has been without work since parting ways with Spurs almost a year ago and he has been linked with a number of high profile jobs during that time.

Recent reports indicated that he was Manchester United’s and Manchester City’s first-choice to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Pep Guardiola respectively if the latter does not sign a new deal at the Etihad Stadium (Daily Mirror).

El Transistor (via The Sun) claimed on Saturday that the 48-year-old has also had contact with Real Madrid over replacing Zinedine Zidane at the helm.

However, Championat report that the former Spurs boss could be set for a shock move to Russia.

Pochettino is reportedly being lined up by Zenit as the man to replace Sergei Semak as their next manager.

The report suggests that Pochettino is ‘open to proposals’ and the Russian side have a ‘real chance’ of landing him.

Spurs Web Opinion

We should take this report with a pinch of salt as no one outside Russia seems to be reporting this. I cannot see Pochettino taking the Zenit job as he is clearly not a man who prioritises his pay-package above the value of the project. I do not think he would be open to working outside the top five European leagues given how his stock is at the moment.
