According to a report by the Express, Mauricio Pochettino could use his friendship with Barcelona’s midfielder Carlos Alena’s agent to get a loan deal for the midfielder over the line in January.
Pochettino is said to be very close friends with Alena’s representative, Ivan de la Pena and the pair reportedly watched the 21-year-old play last season in a Barcelona B tie at the Miniestadi in Catalonia.
de la Pena is a former professional footballer having played for Barcelona as well as Espanyol, whilst Pochettino was also a player there.
Mundo Deportivo reported a couple of days ago that Barcelona have decided to let Alena leave on a loan deal in January in order to help him get some game time under his belt.
While the youngster is highly rated at the club, he has found playing time very hard to come by so far this season.
Spurs are said to be long-time admirers of the Spain U-21 international but with a whole host of clubs interested in him, Pochettino’s relationship with De la Pena could become crucial in helping attract Alena to Spurs.

I really don’t see a point in having Alena on loan for six months without the option to sign him permanently. If he does perform well in the loan spell, his price is likely to go up and Barca might decide to keep him. So, I would prefer the club to sign someone like Bruno Fernandes permanently instead.
