Report: Postecoglou and Spurs receive blow in alleged interest in defender

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham target Harry Maguire wants to stay at Manchester United despite struggling for game time this season.

Tottenham’s interest in Maguire first came to light earlier this week when The Daily Mail reported that Ange Postecoglou had approved the North London club’s interest in the centre-back.

The report claimed that the Lilywhites were ‘well placed’ to snap up the England international should they decide to push ahead with a move.

This was subsequently followed by an update on Football Transfers on Wednesday, with the publication stating that Spurs were facing competition from Aston Villa and Everton for Maguire.

The outlet added that the 30-year-old is keen to leave Old Trafford and play regular football next season in order to keep his place in England’s starting eleven ahead of next summer’s European Championship.

Maguire wants Man Utd stay despite Spurs links

However, this has now been contradicted by The Athletic, who report that one source with an understanding of the situation has said that Maguire wishes to remain at United next season.

It is alleged that the Red Devils have done some work to look for potential buyers for the centre-back, who they value at £40m, with Spurs and West Ham proposed as potential destinations for the former Leicester City star.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that Maguire is now essentially the fifth choice at United, with Varane, Martinez, Shaw and Lindelof all ahead of him in Erik Ten Hag’s pecking order, the England star looks quite likely to leave Old Trafford this summer.

While I can see why Tottenham would have wanted him during the Conte era, I would be surprised if they now pushed ahead with a move for the Man Utd, given that Postecoglou plays quite a high defensive line.
