Report: Postecoglou ‘optimistic’ about signing a striker as Spurs eye 27-year-old

The Daily Mirror have revealed that Ange Postecoglou is optimistic about signing a striker in January, with Tottenham continuing to eye Ivan Toney.

The lack of cutting-edge in the final third has been an issue for Tottenham over the last few weeks, with Postecoglou himself admitting last week that his side lack conviction in attack (Football.London).

However, Spurs showed against Newcastle United on Sunday how potent an attacking force they can be when things click for them, with Richarlison netting a brace and Son Heung-min registering two assists and converting from the penalty spot.

Tottenham want a striker for Ange Postecoglou

However, despite this, Postecoglou is thought to be keen on adding a striker to his squad next month, with The Mirror stating that the Australian is optimistic that it will happen.

The outlet reveals that they have heard from some sources that the Lilywhites are expected to compete with Arsenal and Chelsea for Toney, but Brentford are said to be keen on hanging on the centre-forward until next summer.

The publication adds that Santiago Gimenez is seen as a ‘more viable option’ for Spurs, who have heavily scouted the Mexican but Feyenoord are also thought to be hesitant to let their star man leave mid-season.

I would be quite surprised if Spurs enter the market for a centre-forward in January. I suspect Postecoglou would prefer a versatile attacker like Brennan Johnson, who could play across the forward line.
