The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has revealed that James Maddison is tempted to join Newcastle United despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

The report states that Newcastle have had a long-standing interest in Maddison, having seen a £50m offer turned down by Leicester City for the attacking midfielder last summer.

It is alleged that the Magpies are now ready to reignite their interest in the England international, who is expected to go for a similar fee despite having just 12 months left on his contract at the King Power Stadium.

Edwards explains that Eddie Howe’s men are aware that they face competition from Tottenham for Maddison, who had previously indicated a desire to move to the capital.

Maddison is tempted by Newcastle move over Spurs

However, the journalist adds that with Newcastle now being able to offer Champions League football, sources close to the player have said that he is now tempted by the prospect of moving to Tyneside.

This report comes just a day after The Telegraph’s John Percy claimed that Ange Postecoglou had given the green light for Tottenham to push ahead with a move for Maddison.

Not only can Newcastle offer Champions League football but they appear to be a club on the up while there has been plenty of turmoil at Tottenham over recent months.

That might make Maddison rethink whether he wants to move to the North London club.

However, having said that, there is no doubt that Spurs remain an attractive destination and should the club propose an ambitious project to the 26-year-old, he can perhaps be convinced to make the move to N17, particularly if Harry Kane stays.
