According to the print edition of Corriere dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Eric Dier’s struggles at Tottenham this season are causing some doubts at Roma over whether he will be the right option for them.
Over the past few weeks, several Italian outlets have claimed that Dier is Roma’s top centre-back target in January, with the Giallorossi said to be ready to swoop for the player as soon as the transfer window opens (AS Roma Live).
Some sources had even claimed recently that Jose Mourinho had already reached out to the 29-year-old about a switch (TMW).
However, last week, Gazzetta dello Sport stated that the Tottenham man is no longer the Serie A club’s top target, with Mourinho’s men prioritising other centre-backs such as Trevoh Chalobah and Oumar Solet.
Dier’s struggles this season may put Roma off
Corriere have now shed light on why that is the case, explaining that Dier’s struggles to get any game time is causing doubts at the Italian capital.
The Englishman was overlooked by Ange Postecoglou even when both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were unavailable, with the Australian choosing to play Emerson Royal at centre-back over the former Sporting Lisbon man.
Corriere point out that Dier has only played 146 minutes of football since the start of the campaign and reveal that Roma deem it insufficient for the player to make an instant impact at the Stadio Olimpico.
Spurs Web Opinion
While Dier might prefer to run his contract down and leave as a free agent next season, he will be aware his stock will drop even further if he warms the bench at Spurs for the rest of the season. So, I expect the 29-year-old to seriously consider any opportunity that comes his way in January.
