Report: Potential blow for Spurs as La Liga giants swoop to strike deal for teenager

In what comes a potentially massive blow to Tottenham, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Atletico Madrid have agreed a fee with Royal Antwerp for the transfer of midfield sensation Arthur Vermeeren, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham.

It has been widely reported over the last couple of months that Tottenham have their eye on Vermeeren, who has emerged as one of the best young players in Belgian football over the last 18 months and has taken the Champions League storm this season.

Just a few days ago, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold reiterated that Spurs are continuing to track the teenager and are considering signing him and loaning him back to Antwerp for the remainder of the season.

However, over the last 48 hours, Atletico Madrid have seemingly entered the race for the 18-year-old, and Romano has now suggested they have already agreed on a fee for the midfielder.

According to the Italian journalist, Atleti and Antwerp have settled on a fee of €22m (£18.8m) plus add-ons for the transfer of Vermeeren to the Metropolitano Stadium.

The journalist reveals that the Belgian club are expected to have a sell-on clause on the midfielder but he adds the La Liga giants are still in talks with the player’s camp over personal terms.

Agreeing personal terms with Vermeeren should not be an issue for Diego Simeone’s men. It looks like Atleti have a deal for the 18-year-old all but wrapped up. The fact that Tottenham have not intervened suggests that they remain focused on other midfield targets, potentially Conor Gallagher or Adam Wharton.
