Report: Potential boost for Spurs as Arsenal could pull out of race for PL star

In what comes as a potential boost for Tottenham in their pursuit of Ivan Toney, Football Transfers are now reporting that Arsenal could turn their attention to Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres instead.

Toney looks set to be one of the most hotly contested signings of the summer window, with the striker entering the final year of his contract at Brentford in June.

Various publications have revealed over the last few months that Spurs could battle it out with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle and Man Utd for the 27-year-old’s signature (HITC).

However, a little over a week ago, GiveMeSport suggested that Tottenham are hoping that the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea would prioritise other centre-forward so that they can have a free run at Toney.

The report suggested that while Ange Postecoglou’s men are big fans of the Bees star, they are not particularly keen on getting involved in a bidding war for the player.

Arsenal may not move for Ivan Toney

It now appears that Tottenham could get their wish, with Football Transfers reporting that the Gunners are prioritising a move for Gyokeres over Toney.

The report explains that Mikel Arteta feels that the Sporting star can ‘seamlessly slot into various attacking positions’, given the attributes he possesses.

The outlet adds that the Sweden international has the exact traits that Mikel Arteta is looking for and fits Arsenal’s vision perfectly, which is why he is preferred to Toney and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not see either Liverpool or Man City pursuing Toney in the summer. Arsenal would certainly be Tottenham’s main threat in the race for the Brentford star and if they look elsewhere, we would have a fantastic opportunity to win the race for the 27-year-old, particularly since we look likely to qualify for the Champions League.
