Report: Premier League club step up pursuit of Sonny Perkins amidst Spurs interest

The Daily Mail have revealed that Leeds United have now stepped up their pursuit of Sonny Perkins, who Tottenham Hotspur are ‘keen on’ signing this summer.

Perkins has been in West Ham’s academy since 2019 and the versatile forward has won many admirers with his performance for the club’s youth sides.

During the 2021/22 campaign, the 18-year-old notched up 10 goals in 20 appearances for the club’s Under-23s and another four goals in as many matches for the Under-18s (Transfermarkt).

Perkins made his senior debut for the Hammers last season but The Guardian reported last month that David Moyes’ men were struggling to convince the teenager to sign a new deal.

The report stated that Spurs, Aston Villa and Leeds have all expressed an interest in the England Under-18 international.

The Mail have now revealed that Perkins is a free agent after rejecting West Ham’s contract offer.

The report states that while Tottenham and Villa remain keen on the striker, it is Leeds who have made the first move to sign him.

The Elland Road hierarchy are said to be in contact with Perkins’ camp regarding a move to the club.

One of the challenges that Spurs and the other ‘big six’ teams have in attracting the best young talent to their academies, is the fact that the pathway to the first team would be simpler in clubs like Leeds.

Perkins might understandably feel that he has a much better chance of breaking into Leeds’ starting eleven next season than he does at Tottenham.
