Report: Premier League rivals ‘confident’ they can beat Spurs to 27-year-old

The Telegraph have claimed that Newcastle United are confident of winning the race to sign rumoured Tottenham target Kalvin Phillips.

Until a week ago, several outlets had continued to insist that the race for Phillips’ signature was a three-horse contest between Spurs, Newcastle and Juventus.

However, it had been reported previously by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold a few weeks ago that the Lilywhites were simply not able to offer the England international the guarantees he was looking for regarding game time.

Newcastle now confident of signing Kalvin Phillips

The Telegraph have said that the Magpies are now hopeful that they will be able to sign the City star on loan in January.

The report states that the club from the North East hope to get a deal agreed upon swiftly, with the midfielder having been identified as a top priority.

It is said that even though Newcastle have not yet made a bid for the player, they now want to open talks as soon as possible and are confident that they can reach an agreement with the Premier League champions.

Interestingly, the outlet makes no mention of Spurs, instead suggesting that Eddie Howe’s men know they face competition from Juve, Everton and Crystal Palace for Phillips’ signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

The Phillips transfer never appeared to be on the cards for Spurs, with the midfielder evidently prioritising regular game time ahead of the Euros, which he is not going to get in North London.

Now that Conor Gallagher has seemingly been put on the shop window, I believe that the 23-year-old would have likely become Tottenham’s top central midfield target.
