Football Insider have revealed that Newcastle United have now opened preliminary talks with Leicester City regarding a deal for Tottenham target James Maddison.
It has been widely reported over the last few months that Maddison is on the radars of both Tottenham and Newcastle, with The Telegraph even asserting a little over a month ago that Spurs were leading the race for his signature.
The publication asserted that Leicester had already given up their hope of retaining the attacker midfielder, with the Foxes said to be willing to accept £50m for him this summer.
If Football Insider’s latest update is to be believed, it is Newcastle who have made the first move for Maddison ahead of the summer transfer window.
It is explained that Eddie Howe is eager to add more creativity and midfield depth to his side and views the England international as an ‘ideal fit’.
The Tynesiders are said to have already held ‘preliminary talks’ through third parties regarding a potential transfer.

Newcastle look likely to be in the Champions League, which would give them an advantage over Spurs in the race for Maddison’s signature.
While Tottenham would still be an attractive destination for the Leicester star if we present him with an ambitious project, it would be impossible for the North London club to convince the midfielder until we have a manager in place.
