Report provides details of Spurs interest in James Maddison this summer

Football Insider have reported that Tottenham Hotspur will not shy away from competing with Newcastle United and Manchester City for James Maddison’s signature in the summer, despite the riches of the two clubs.

It emerged last week that the Foxes are trying to tie down Maddison to a new contract ahead of the summer to ward off interest from the likes of Spurs (90 min).

However, Football Insider have now claimed that the attacking midfielder feels ‘very strongly’ about playing at the highest level possible and will thus eye a move to a Champions League club in the summer.

The report reveals that Leicester will not hesitate to cash in on the 26-year-old if they are unable to make progress in talks over a new deal.

It is explained that the England international wants to be a ‘key man’ at any potential destination, with Tottenham thought to be willing to offer that to him.

Football Insider state that it would take a fee of around £60-£70m to snap up Maddison in the summer and add that Spurs are willing to compete with Newcastle and City on both the transfer fee and salary.

The only question with signing Maddison would be where he fits in at Spurs, given that Conte seems tied to a 3-4-3. If the Italian shifts to a 3-5-2, that would potentially mean that one of Son or Kulusevski misses out on the starting eleven.

With Football Insider stating that Maddison wants to be a ‘key man’ at his next destination, perhaps the fact that he does not fit naturally into Conte’s system might discourage the 26-year-old from picking Spurs.

Of course, there remains the possibility of Conte leaving Tottenham at the end of the season. If someone like Pochettino or De Zerbi takes over, signing Maddison would be a no-brainer as he could be a very important piece of the puzzle in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3.
