Report provides more details about Atletico decision to sign Doherty after Spurs exit

The Sun have revealed that it was Atletico Madrid’s board rather than Diego Simeone who spearheaded the La Liga club’s move for Matt Doherty on transfer deadline day.

The biggest surprise on deadline day from a Tottenham perspective, was the club’s decision to terminate Doherty’s contract, thus allowing the Republic of Ireland international to sign for Atletico.

Football.London explained this morning that the reason Spurs decided to terminate the 30-year-old’s contract rather than loaning him out, was due to the fact that the club were already at the limit of 8 first-team players who can be loaned out after Djed Spence joined Rennes in a temporary deal.

The Sun have now backed up that information and have offered more insight into Atletico’s decision to sign Doherty.

The publication asserts that Simeone was ‘not involved’ in the deal to sign the Tottenham man at all, with the transfer being done purely at the boardroom level.

This does not bode well for Doherty at all as it potentially suggests that the right-back will have to win Simeone over. That will not be easy, given the 30-year-old’s defensive shortcomings. However, this is a great opportunity for the Irishman to improve the defensive side of his game, just as Kieran Trippier did following his switch to Atletico.
