Report provides potential boost to Spurs in pursuit of Brentford’s David Raya

According to a new report from The Athletic, Brentford are yet to tie goalkeeper David Raya to a new contract and the club fear the player may now have his head turned by reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Raya joined Brentford back in 2019 from Blackburn Rovers, and since the Bees have made their way to the Premier League he has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers outside of the ‘big six’, as it were.

In 141 appearances for Brentford, Raya has conceded just 144 goals (Transfermarkt), which is a rather impressive record for any goalkeeper. His shot-stopping ability, as well as composure and ball-playing talents, have been enough to put Raya on the radar of the league’s top clubs.

According to a previous report from The Telegraph, Raya has been identified by Spurs as the long-term successor to current number one goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris.

While there are many targets on the list for Tottenham in that regard, the latest information certainly makes Raya a prime prospect.

The Spanish goalkeeper’s current deal with Brentford expires at the end of next season (Transfermarkt) and Raya is one of many players at the club who are yet to agree a new long-term contract. It is believed that Brentford are yet to even open talks with the 27-year-old at this stage.

The Athletic suggest that, with Raya heading into the final year of his contract with Brentford, the club may be at risk of losing their star goalkeeper for a reduced fee should Tottenham come knocking.

Spurs Web Opinion

David Raya would be very high up on my wishlist when it comes to finding a new number one at Spurs. There are a lot of options out there, some who have more top-flight experience, like Jordan Pickford, but when it comes to ability, Raya is right up there, and by the sounds of it, a deal could be very feasible.
