Report provides update on Ajax and Steven Bergwijn ahead of summer window

The Times have revealed that Ajax are prepared to reignite their interest in Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn this summer.

Bergwijn has struggled to get game time since Antonio Conte arrived at Spurs six months ago.

The Evening Standard reported last week that some at Tottenham feel the Dutchman’s late heroics at the King Power Stadium in January were not in the club’s best interest.

It was explained that his late cameo ensured selling him to Ajax during that window, which the club were considering at that point, would have been a PR disaster.

The 24-year-old told Dutch publication AD a few days ago that he does not see himself at Tottenham next season and would be open to returning to the Eredivisie.

Conte admitted after Spurs’ win over the Foxes on Sunday that the former PSV Eindhoven man has not got as many minutes as he deserves due to the quality of the other forwards at his disposal (Football.London).

The Times have now reported that despite seeing their £18m offer for Bergwijn rebuffed by Spurs in January, Ajax have indicated to the North London club that they plan on trying to sign the winger again this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Bergwijn has not been given a fair crack this season and the winger looks nailed on to depart. I believe he is more than capable of shining at another Premier League club or in a top league like the Serie A.

However, with the World Cup coming up in November, the 24-year-old might feel that returning to the Eredivisie would give him the best chance of establishing himself as a regular starter for the Netherlands.
