Report provides update on Bergwijn – Mentions Ajax, Man Utd and talks with Spurs chiefs

The Athletic have revealed that several Premier League clubs are showing an interest in Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn ahead of the summer transfer window.

Bergwijn admitted in an interview with Dutch publication AD last week that he is likely to leave Spurs in the summer in search of regular game time.

The Athletic have now explained that the 24-year-old informed the Tottenham hierarchy back in February that he will leave if he is not getting minutes and the North London club do not plan to stand in his way.

One well-placed source inside Spurs was even quoted as saying that Bergwijn will ‘100 per cent’ leave at the end of the season.

The report reveals that Ajax will reignite their interest in the Tottenham man after being unable to pay Spurs’ asking price of around €25m (£20.8m) for the wide man in January.

Additionally, it is asserted that Manchester United could show interest in the winger, with Erik Ten Hag thought to be a fan of the player.

The Athletic state while ‘there is nothing concrete’ from Man Utd for now, Bergwijn is also on the radar of other English clubs and clubs from across the continent.

It is said that Spurs are ready to take a hit on the £25.4m (€30.2m) they paid to sign the attacker from PSV Eindhoven back in 2020.

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be surprised if Spurs decide to sell Bergwijn to a direct rival. The club will likely accept a lower fee from a foreign club rather than selling him to Man Utd.

Having said that, not a lot of clubs in Italy or Spain are in a financial position to spend upwards of £20m on a player this summer. So, it will be interesting to see where Bergwijn ends up.
