Report provides update on Sergio Reguilon’s Tottenham future

According to Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda, Real Madrid are planning on activating Sergio Reguilon’s buy-back clause next summer on the back of his impressive performances for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Tottenham secured Reguilon for a fee of around £28m, with Real Madrid inserting a buy-back clause in the contract that would allow them to re-sign the left-back for £43m (Football.London).

The left-back has made a fantastic start to life in North London and has already established himself as a mainstay in Jose Mourinho’s side.

It is not just the 23-year-old’s performances on the pitch that have caught the eye but he also seems to be an effervescent character away from it, establishing a great rapport with his new teammates.

Spurs fans will be hoping that the Spain international feels at home at the club and does not feel the need to go back to Madrid but if Inda is to be believed, Los Blancos could activate Reguilon’s buy-back release clause next summer.

The journalist said in an interview with El Chiringuito (as relayed by Sport Witness) that the Tottenham defender is being lined up as a replacement for Marcelo.

The Brazilian has struggled for form at the start of this season and, if his performances fail to pick up, it is claimed that this could be his final season at the Spanish capital.

If Marcelo does leave, Inda indicates that Real Madrid would look to bring Reguilon back to the Santiago Bernabeau.

Even if Marcelo does leave at the end of this season (which is looking increasingly likely), Ferland Mendy seems to be going from strength to strength. So, it is unlikely that Madrid will be able to promise Reguilon that he will be a regular starter. Hopefully, the 23-year-old will not want to warm the bench at the Spanish capital.

It also looks as though Zidane is set to stay for the time being after their progression to the Champions League knockout stages. Given the bad blood between Reguilon and the Real Madrid boss, that will hopefully convince the Tottenham man to reject a return to the Spanish capital.
