Report provides update on Spurs and Chelsea-linked Josko Gvardiol situation

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea have failed with an attempt to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol, who is also thought to be of interest to Tottenham.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that Gvardiol was one of the names on Antonio Conte’s wishlist for the left-sided centre-back role (Football.London).

However, Spurs snapped up Clement Lenglet on loan instead, with reports indicating that Leipzig’s demands for the 20-year-old proved too excessive for the North London club (The Athletic)

Any hope of Tottenham reigniting their interest in the Croat appeared to take a blow when it emerged earlier this week that Chelsea were in advanced talks to sign the defender and had submitted an offer of €90m (£77.3m) to Leipzig (Fabrizio Romano).

However, Romano has now taken to social media to reveal that the Blues’ offer has been turned down by Leipzig and the centre-back has put pen to paper on a new contract at the Red Bull Arena.

The journalist added that Thomas Tuchel’s men are expected to restart talks with the Bundesliga club for Gvardiol in January.

If it is true that Leipzig have rejected a near £80m bid from Chelsea for Gvardiol, that would likely rule us out of the race. The only way Spurs would have a chance of signing the 20-year-old is if his contract potentially has a release clause of around £50m-£60m that can be activated next summer.
