Report provides update on Tottenham’s Heung-min Son and his protective mask

A report from The Telegraph suggests Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-min Son will continue to wear his protective face mask when the season resumes on Boxing Day.

It’s been a frustrating first half of the season for Son, who failed to recapture his form of the previous campaign where he won the Premier League Golden Boot. The 30-year-old has just five goals to his name this term, three of which came in the same game (Transfermarkt).

Son suffered a fractured eye in the Champions League clash with Marseille at the start of November (Telegraph) which not only saw him miss the last three Spurs games before the international break but also put his World Cup dreams at risk.

The South Korea captain wore a protective mask (Mirror) which allowed him to play in all of his country’s games at the World Cup.

When South Korea were knocked out of the tournament, Son made it clear he was keen to get back into action for Spurs as soon as possible JoongAng Daily (05/12/22 via the Evening Standard).

By the sounds of the latest report from The Telegraph, that will involve Son continuing to wear his face mask, with the attacker likely to be wearing it for the Boxing Day clash with Brentford.

As we approach two months since Son suffered the injury to his eye socket, it is hoped the mask won’t have to stay for much longer. Nevertheless, as an immediate precaution, Son is “likely to have to keep wearing his protective mask.”

The winger came on for a second-half cameo against Nice in a friendly last night and was still sporting the protective mask for now.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s better to be safe than sorry, and I’m sure the face mask won’t affect Son’s game too much. He didn’t quite look himself at the World Cup, but I think that’s more of a continuation of his early season form than anything else. Hopefully, he is fired up and ready to smash it in the second half of the season.
