Ryan Sessegnon could miss Tottenham’s opening match of the Premier League season against Manchester City due to injury, Football.London have revealed.
After struggling to get a run of matches under his belt in his first season at Tottenham, Sessegnon showed glimpses of his quality on loan at Hoffenheim last season, finishing the campaign with 2 goals and 3 assists in 23 Bundesliga appearances.
The 21-year-old will be hoping to build on the form he showed in Germany and stake a claim for a place in the starting line-up under Nuno Espirito Santo at Spurs.
The former Fulham man has not featured in any of Tottenham’s pre-season friendlies so far, with Alasdair Gold explaining that his absence is down to the fact he is recovering from an injury.
The report reveals that Sessegnon suffered a minor hamstring injury three weeks ago but he is now back on the training pitches at Hotspur Way, working with the club’s medical staff.
It is also suggested that Nuno rates the England Under-21 international highly, having previously tried to take him to Wolves while he was in charge at Molineux.
Sessegnon is said to have held positive discussions with the new Spurs head coach, who wants him to compete with Ben Davies and Sergio Reguilon for the left-back spot this season.
The left-footer also suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty with England Under-21’s last summer which forced him to miss the start of the 2019/20 campaign (Football.London).
Spurs Web Opinion
While it is undoubtedly a massive positive that Nuno rates Sessegnon, I believe loaning the youngster out for another season would be ideal for his development.
Despite our involvement in the Europa Conference League, I cannot see Sessegnon playing more than 15 games next season if he stays at Spurs.
