Report: RB Leipzig director rules out selling Spurs-linked Gvardiol to Chelsea

In what comes as a potential boost to Tottenham, Sky Sports have revealed that RB Leipzig have ruled out the possibility of selling Josko Gvardiol to Chelsea.

Reports earlier in the summer revealed that Gvardiol was one of Tottenham’s top targets for the left centre-back role (Football.London).

The Athletic reported last month that it was Leipzig’s excessive demands and Antonio Conte’s intention to bring players in early that eventually led to Spurs deciding to sign Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona instead.

It appeared as if Chelsea were going to win the race for Gvardiol, with Fabrizio Romano claiming on Tuesday that the Blues were in ‘advanced talks’ with Leipzig over a deal for Croat.

The journalist claimed that Thomas Tuchel’s men had submitted an offer of €90m (£77.3m) and if a deal were to be agreed, the 20-year-old would make the switch to Stamford Bridge next summer.

However, if Sky Sports’ latest update is to be believed, Leipzig managing director Oliver Mintzlaff has revealed that the move is not going to happen.

Mintzlaff is alleged to have remarked that Gvardiol will not be joining Chelsea or any other club before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Spurs Web Opinion

This is good news for Spurs as it means that our hope of signing Gvardiol next summer could still be alive. I fully expect us to prioritise the signing of either the Croat or Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni next summer, as Lenglet appears to be nothing more than a temporary stop-gap.
