Report: Recently departed Spurs star might be on the move again this summer

The print edition of AS (26/03/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) has revealed that Matt Doherty’s spell at Atletico Madrid looks set to come to an end this summer.

Tottenham’s decision to terminate Doherty’s contract on transfer deadline day in January caught most people off guard, with the right-back signing a short-term contract with Atletico.

Speaking to The Independent last week, the Republic of Ireland international explained that the idea was for him to initially joined the La Liga side on loan but the plan changed once Spurs realised they were at the limit of the number of players they could loan out in a single season.

Things have not gone according to plan for the 31-year-old since his move to the Spanish capital as he has been handed just 12 minutes of action in the league so far at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Mundo Deportivo reported a few days ago that Diego Simeone did not ask for Doherty but the Atletico hierarchy saw his availability as a market opportunity to solve a perceived weakness in the squad.

AS have now stated that the right-back’s future with the Colchoneros is at risk as the move has not worked out the way both parties would have wanted.

The publication adds that Doherty has just 12 games to rescue the situation and that if he fails to prove his worth before that, his time at the club might come to an end this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

I have no doubt that Doherty will have plenty of suitors in the Premier League if Atletico do not extend his contract, particularly since he would be available on free in the summer.

I still cannot get over Tottenham’s lack of oversight regarding their loan situation in January, which meant that we missed out on a transfer fee for the 31-year-old.
