Report reveals how close Harry Kane is to the worst PL goal drought of his career

Harry Kane’s goalless start to the 2021/22 Premier League campaign is the second-longest dry spell in his career, however, he will be looking to put an end to it against Newcastle United today.

The 28-year-old has endured a tough start to the campaign and has struggled to hit the heights of his early-season form last year.

Kane has played in six of Tottenham’s seven fixtures in the Premier League and has blanked in each of them so far, making it the second-longest top-flight drought of his career.

His worst spell came between April and October 2014 – an overlap between the end of the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns respectively. This drought lasted eight games in total.

The Spurs talisman’s lack of form also carried over into the recent international break, where he looked out of sorts during England’s 1-1 draw against Hungary.

However, Kane came out to defend his performances in the first handful of months this season, telling ITV Sport: “I’m in a good place. Obviously, I know there’s been a lot of talk about me, at the end of the day I’ve still scored nine goals this season. I’m there, I’m working as hard as I can for the team. When the chances come, I’m confident I will put them away.”

Kane’s next opportunity to reverse his fortunes comes in the domestic return against Newcastle, who are fresh off their £300 million Saudi-led takeover.

Although the trip to a packed St James’ Park is expected to be a tough encounter for visiting Spurs, it is a fixture that Kane has typically fared well in.

He has notched six goals in the Premier League against the Magpies, while five of them have come away from home in Tyneside.

Kane will likely take solace in the fact that Newcastle have had a wretched start to the season under Steve Bruce, winless in seven, having conceded 16 goals so far, which is the joint-worst record in the division.

Although it is expected to be a difficult match-up for Spurs given everything that has happened off the field, Kane may take the attention being off him as a positive.

Spurs often fall back on Kane to deliver when the going gets tough, and that will likely be the case this weekend.
