Report reveals how Cristiano Ronaldo helped Tottenham secure Antonio Conte

Manchester Evening News have revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo vetoed Antonio Conte as a possible Manchester United manager back in October.

Conte was linked with the Manchester United hot seat back in October when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was coming under pressure (Guardian) but it was Spurs who pounced on the Italian first, appointing him as Nuno Espirito Santo’s replacement at the start of November.

United eventually replaced Solskjaer with Ralf Rangnick as interim head coach but the German has not managed to turn the Red Devils’ fortunes around.

MEN have now revealed that Ronaldo expressed his reservations to the United board about appointing Conte. The Portuguese striker’s reservations were fed back to the United board, who were ‘not keen’ on the Italian.

The report goes on to explain that the majority of the United squad want former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino to be their next manager.

However, United are now said to be finalising the process of appointing Erik Ten Hag, with the club allegedly not consulting the players about the Dutchman’s candidacy.

Spurs Web Opinion

I was surprised that United allowed us to have a free run at Conte but I am even more gobsmacked that they are now seemingly hiring Ten Hag over Pochettino.

It is worth remembering that Spurs chose against appointing Ten Hag after interviewing him last summer (The Sun).

The Dutchman does not seem like the sort of character who can galvanise the United dressing room and I can see the appointment turning sour quickly given the egos at United.
