Report reveals how much Benfica want for Nunez – Spurs interested since 2019

According to the print edition of A Bola (12/04/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur have been longtime admirers of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

Nunez has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe this season, having found the back of the net 32 times across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The striker is understandably thought to be attracting interest from several top sides in the Premier League and around Europe.

It emerged last month that agent Jorge Mendes had allegedly approached the Uruguayan international about potentially replacing Harry Kane at Spurs (The Athletic).

The Sun reported this week that the Benfica star would prefer to join the likes of Spurs and Arsenal over Manchester City, given his physical style of play and wish to get regular game time.

A Bola have now revealed this is not the first time that Spurs have turned their attention to Nunez, with the North London club alleged to have been following his progress back in 2019 when he was playing for Almeria.

The report adds that Tottenham face competition from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain, Inter Milan and AC Milan for the 22-year-old.

It is asserted that Benfica will demand a fee of around €80m (£66.4m) to let Nunez go this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Nunez is a realistic target for Spurs as I expect Kane to stay. So, I do not see us paying big money for a backup striker and the Uruguayan will not want to be the England captain’s understudy. I expect the 22-year-old to end up at Man Utd, Chelsea or Arsenal.
