The Times have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur want to recoup the £22m they paid to sign Emerson Royal last summer.

Spurs are reportedly targeting Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence (Football Insider), with the 21-year-old set to battle Matt Doherty for a place in the starting eleven next season (Football.London’s Alasdair Gold).

Emerson could thus be on his way out of the North London club just 12 months after joining from Barcelona.

Sky Sports News reported last week that Atletico Madrid could make a move for the Brazilian, with the Los Colchoneros said to hold a long-term interest in the former Real Betis man.

Atletico’s interest in Emerson was also backed up by AS, who claimed that Diego Simeone’s side are hoping to sign the right-back on an initial loan deal with an option to buy.

The Times have now revealed that Antonio Conte has given the green light for Emerson to be sold, with the Italian wanting to bring in a right-back who is ‘more comfortable going forward’.

However, the report adds that Spurs would want a fee of £22m to let the former Real Betis man leave the club.

Emerson’s value has certainly not depreciated from last summer and he has proven that he is a very competent right-back in a back four. However, the issue Spurs will face in getting a decent fee for the 23-year-old is that not a lot of La Liga clubs have money to throw around at the moment.
